Engaging Business: Human Trafficking

As business people, we sometimes experience a split between doing our jobs and contributing to the well-being of the world. We may think that our ability to make the world a better place is limited to our life outside of work: our families, our volunteer work, or the money we give to charitable organizations. But what if businesses could be systems of good in the world–over and above the provision of jobs? What if businesses could align themselves to help eradicate one of the worst human rights crimes in the world?

Right now, human trafficking is the fastest growing and second largest organized crime (behind drug trafficking) in the world. This exponential growth is driven by the profitability of the crime. Traffickers can sell drugs or arms only once. They can sell people over and over and over again. Unfortunately, this crime is being funded and facilitated in part by legitimate businesses – and most business people are completely unaware that this crime is taking place.
